Employed labourers 51m in 2009

The number of the country's employed labour forces was 51 million in 2009 out of 59.3 million economically active population, according to a Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) survey.
The BBS conducted the survey in 2009 on 700 primary sampling units mainly to review the labour forces dynamics of the country.
However, the number of unemployed labourers was 2.7 million in the period, the survey said.
Of the employed labour forces, 38.5 million are males and 12.5 million females.
According to the survey of 2005-06, there were 47.4 million labour forces in the country.
According to the latest survey, a total of 12.2 million labourers are employed in the urban areas and 38.8 million in the rural areas.
The number of males of the total active labour forces reached 40.2 million while female labour forces 13.5 million.
Of the employed labour forces, 43.6 per cent are employed in the agriculture sector while 56.4 per cent in the non-agricultural sector.
The status in the employment during the period was self-employed 20 million, employers 0.2 million, employees 8.7 million, unpaid family helpers 10.8 million, day labourers 10.3 million and others 0.9 million.
Industries relating to agriculture and forestry hired 22.2 million labour forces, mining and quarrying 0.1 million, manufacturing 6.9 million, electricity, gas and water 0.1 million, construction 2.0 million, trade and hotels 7.8 million, transport 4.2 million, finance and business services 1.2 million.
The survey said that 62.7 million of the population are of the age of 15 years and over.
