\\\'Empowering JS won\\\'t undermine freedom of judiciary\\\'

Tuesday, 19 August 2014

The judiciary’s freedom will not be compromised if the Jatiya Sangsad (parliament) is empowered to impeach Supreme Court (SC) judges, said the Law Commission chairman. Countries like the United States, India and UK have the same provision, he said in an instant reaction after a Cabinet meeting approved the ‘Constitution (16th Amendment) Act, 2014’ on Monday afternoon, allowing the JS to remove judges of the country’s apex court. Responding to a question the Law Commission chair said the situation in those countries (democratic and developed states) was like us when they empowered the House to impeach judges, according to a news agency.
