Empowering youth diplomacy through DUNMUN 2023

The Dhaka University National Model United Nations (DUNMUN) 2023, conference that started on July 19, concluded with its inspiring closing ceremony on July 22. The event served as a catalyst, uniting delegates from Bangladesh and beyond, providing them an invaluable platform to engage in diplomatic debates, foster global awareness, and promote meaningful discussions on critical global issues. With over 500 delegates and 12 committees, including five entirely new ones to the Bangladesh MUN circuit, DUNMUN 2023 proved to be an extraordinary gathering with the hard work of its 39 secretariat board members. The four-day conference was a testament to the delegates' exceptional skills and knowledge. Delegates talked about girls' education, climate change, statistics, security, and many other international issues.
The theme of the conference, "Towards Equitable Governance: Embracing Data-Driven Transformation for An Inclusive World," set the stage for insightful debates and discussions on a diverse range of topics. The dynamic forum provided delegates with the freedom to express their opinions, develop their critical thinking skills, and deepen their comprehension of global issues. Embarking upon the realm of diplomacy, the inaugural ceremony of DUNMUN 2023 established a captivating backdrop for stimulating deliberations. Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka set the stage on July 19 for the grand opening of the biggest MUN Conference in Southeast Asia, Dhaka University National Model United Nations 2023.
Md Akhtaruzzaman, vice chancellor, University of Dhaka, attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest on July 19. He emphasised the theme of this year's conference as he quoted, " Data has the capacity to bring about dramatic change, empowering us to develop policies, strategies, and decisions that guarantee an equitable and welcoming environment for all." Fariha Fiyaz, the first female president in the history of Dhaka University Model United Nations Association (DUMUNA) lit up the whole atmosphere with her bold speech during the opening day consisting of relevant themes and leadership. Fariha Fiyaz, also secretary general of DUNMUN 2023, quoted, "We started our journey with the vision of pioneering Model MUN in Bangladesh but we envisioned a dream of making our beloved DUMUNA a pioneer youth organisation in the country as well. Flash forward to an era, standing at this podium, I hope I can say proudly that our dream has come true."
Distinguished speakers commended the delegates' efforts and accomplishments, recognising their dedication to diplomacy, collaboration, and problem-solving at the closing ceremony. As the event progressed over these four days, it provided a transformative experience for participants from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds, fostering an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding. The conference offered an opportunity for networking and learning from colleagues with diverse perspectives and experiences, contributing to a more inclusive global community. During the event, their revolutionary equity policy was meticulously adhered to, adding yet another layer of success to the conference. This commitment to equity and fairness further reinforces the positive impact of this year's DUNMUN on the development of future leaders, diplomats, and world-changers.
As the chief guest of the closing ceremony held on July 22, Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives Minister Md Tazul Islam found the conference's theme inspirational. He stated, "In my career, I have worked toward decentralisation and devolution of power in order to support a fair government." His presence highlighted the significance of engaging youth in shaping a brighter future for our planet. Masud Bin Momen, foreign secretary of Foreign Affairs, attended the closing ceremony as the special guest. He expressed his delight at witnessing talented young minds showcasing their diplomatic skills. He wished them all luck while stating, "To the young minds in this room, I say this: seize every opportunity that comes your way."
The closing ceremony of DUNMUN 2023 marked an inspiring moment for the participants, showcasing the power of youth diplomacy and international collaboration. The conference served as a driving force for empowering young minds to become active global citizens, armed with the tools of negotiation, public speaking, and diplomacy.
