En masse resignation halts production in Alim Jute Mill, Khulna

KHULNA, Aug 14 (UNB): Alim Jute Mill faces closure after the en masse resignation by its officials and employees Monday night, bringing its production to a complete halt.
Mill sources said 801 workers out of 812, 51 employees out of 57, and six officials, out of 20, submitted their resignation letters to the authorities, apprehending that the mill would be closed soon or might be run by BJMC under joint ownership.
They decided to resign hoping that their resignation would be brought under a Golden Handshake Programme so that they do not face any complication in getting their arrears once the mill is closed or its ownership is changed.
The mill authorities are yet to take a decision on the resignation letters submitted by the mill staff.
A senior official of the mill said the BJMC has allocated Tk 0.78 million for six state-owned mills for purchasing jute on August 8, excluding Alim Jute Mill. "This has created panic among the staff that the mill is going to be closed," he said.
He said it would be wrong if the authorities take any decision to run the mill under joint ownership because "it's the only profitable unit among BJMC's 18 jute mills."
He said the mill made a profit of Tk 3 million producing 295 tonnes of jute products in July. "Uninterrupted power supply can give a further boost to the production," he said.
Set up on 46 acres of land in 1968, the mill was nationalized in 1972.
