Speakers at a seminar in the city have stressed the need to codify a single comprehensive law to combat trafficking in women and children.
They also called for bilateral and multilateral agreements with the neighbouring countries for joint prevention of human trafficking.
Their view came Thursday at a seminar on "Dimensions of Trafficking in Women and Children in Bangladesh and Barriers in Implementation of Laws" organised by Rangpur Dinajpur Rural Service (RDRS), Bangladesh.
State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Dr Shireen Sharmeen Chow-dhury attended the seminar as chief guest and former adviser Rasheda K Choudhury as special guest.
Executive Director of Bangladesh National Women Lawyer's Assoc-iation (BNWLA) Salma Ali presented keynote paper in the seminar.
"While it is time to ponder whether there is a need of a separate comprehensive law addressing the issues related to human trafficking, implementation of the existing laws and rules or regulations also need to be ensured," Dr Shireen said.
She also informed that the government is currently extending the network of the one stop crisis and other rehabilitation centres from the divisional headquarters.
Pointing to the lack of collaboration between different ministries in combating human trafficking, former adviser Mr Rasheda said, "Ministry of Women and Children Affairs should take the lead role in coordinating the actions of different ministries."
