Encouraging unemployed youths
Tuesday, 27 October 2020
Millions of Bangladeshi youths are now struggling due to lack of working opportunities. Lack of technical skills, inadequate knowledge of relevant subjects and lack of orientation for city-centric jobs are also some of the key reasons for the high unemployment--more than 50 per cent graduatesunemployed- in the country. It is almost unlikely that millions of jobs would be created soon in the heavy industries, service sector and small and cottage industries due to the effects of the Covid-19.
Our education, especially general education, prompts students to pursue career in limited areas such as civil service and a few private sector jobs. We are hardly encouraged to try to become entrepreneurs and create many jobs for others as well. Our overseas jobseekers are not also capable of capturing high paid jobs due to lack of required skills including technical and language skills.
On the other hand, unemployed youths face some kind of social stigma and they are often maltreated in families. In the process, many of them lose courage to pursue independent career. Apart from creating opportunities in various sectors, society needs to change attitude towards the youth who deserve opportunity to grow and contribute to society in the future.
