FE Report
The fourth conference of Colombo Process, a regional forum of 11 Asian labour-exporting countries, should endorse protection measures for migrant workers, said leaders of expatriate welfare organisations at a press conference Tuesday. They also said the meeting should give priority to protecting the migrant domestic workers as they run high risks of abuse. The press conference on the 'Protection of the Rights of Asian Migrant Workers' was jointly organised by Human Rights Watch, Migrants Forum in Asia and Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU), at the National Press Club in the city. Human Rights Watch senior reseacher Nisha Varia, Migrant Forum in Asia coordinator William Gois and RMMRU Executive Director and the Chairman of International Relations Department of Dhaka University Dr Chowdhury Abrar, addressed the press conference. The organisations gave a set of recommendations to the delegates of the 'Colombo Process' meeting to lend support to a proposed international convention on labour standards for domestic work, increase civil society participation in future regional dialogues, and take measures to eliminate recruitment fees charged from migrant workers.
