DINAJPUR, Sept 29: The investors and enterprisers from home and abroad keen to set up industries in the country's northwestern region stay away due to acute energy problems.
There is a bright prospect for industries including agro based, coal and hard rock and coal based in the 8 districts under Rangpur division. Specially, after the commissioning of the Bangladesh bridge over river Jamuna, the prospect turned more bright. But even after eight years of commissioning of the bridge, not a single mentionable industry was sat up in the region only due reliable energy support.
Besides paddy, jute, potato, sugar cane, tobacco, etc, the growers of eight districts under Rangpur division produce various kind of fruits, vegetables and various types of crops around the year. Due to long absence of power facilities of preservation and processing, huge quantities of those perish every year. Grower of such agricultural products have to sell their harvest at a throwaway price which lead to huge losses every year.
There is an am ample scope for setting up a number of gas based potato, fruits and vegetables processing and preservation unit in Dinajpur and Rangpur area.
Every year there was a bumper production of mango and litchis in grater Dinajpur. Several thousands tons of mango, potato, tomato and banana perished due want of proper storage and processing facilities. Crying demand for fruits and vegetable processing industries in the area is being felt since long but due to lack of energy support no entrepreneurs are being interested in setting up industries here. For the last consecutive years, there has been a bumper production of Irri-Boro paddy and the growers had to sell paddy at a price below the production cost due to lack of proper system of pressing and Preservation.
