Energy price rise to add misery to commoners

Tuesday, 16 December 2014

The government is thinking about raising the prices of gas and electricity. But it should think twice before doing so, as it will add to the miseries of the common people already struggling to make both ends meet.
I would request the government should clamp down on the prevailing corruption in these sectors instead of increasing prices. We all know that there is widespread corruption in these two sectors and the common people are its unfortunate victims.
Frequent price increases in the energy sector will dissuade investors from making fresh investments.
Furthermore, when power tariffs increase, we see an adverse effect on the economy as prices of commodities and transportation go up.
Our economy is now passing through a sluggish period. Many industries are struggling to survive and if the prices of gas and electricity are increased, it will further aggravate their situation. Some of them may choose to close down their mills and factories.
Energy prices have been revised a number of times since 2008, but unfortunately effective steps to reduce corruption in this sector have not been taken. I hope, the government will consider the impact on manufacturing sector and sufferings of the common people and will not increase gas and power tariffs again.
