England build huge lead after Mushfique's resistance
Monday, 15 March 2010
CHITTAGONG, March 14 (BSS): England played it absolutely safe as they did not impose follow-on to Bangladesh instead opted to bat on to take their lead to a mammoth 434 runs in the second innings on the close of the third day of the first test between Bangladesh and England at Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium here Sunday.
The visitors however found the host bowlers in more positive frame of mind as skipper Shakib Al Hasan, Abdur Razzak and Mahmuddulah Riyad with their left arm spin, spoil a good day for England as they were reduced to 131 for five wickets when the stumps were drawn at the end of the third day's play.
Bangladesh can have some satisfaction that English captain Alastair Cook probably thought the wicket still look pretty good for batting, secondly the resistance by late middle order Bangladesh batters could spark trouble to continue with four bowlers and the third and last he thought of taking no chance to bat on a wearing pitch in the fourth innings.
Earlier in the day England were stretched in the field by the Tigers despite getting the prized scalp of Tamim Iqbal in the third over of the day, Mushfiqur Rahim with a defiant 79, and a Bangladesh record eighth-wicket stand of 113 with Naeem Islam saw England had to work hard to polish off the tail.
One thought the visitors having 303 lead England's second innings will put more pressure to pedestrian Bangladesh bowling attack, Cook and Carberry were off to a flier putting on 69 runs for the first wicket in only 15 overs.
Mahmudullah Riyad got the break as he forced Cook (39 off 55 balls) top-edged to deep square-leg, Jonathan Trott (14) fell to a long hop to Shakib and Kevin Pietersen looking his old self also became Shakib's victim for a fluent 32.
Carberry was caught in front of wicket this time it was Abdur Razzak for 34.
Paul Collingwood who scored 145 in the first inning was cheaply dismissed for three runs by Abdur Razzak.
Razzak with 2 for 7, Shakib with 2 for 33 and Mahamudullah Riyad with 1 for 26 looks very impressive when one remembers England scored 599 for six wickets in the first innings.
Now it will be interesting when will English captain Cook decide to declare his second innings today (Monday).
Earlier in the day, everything depended on Tamim Iqbal batting on 81 but English bowlers had their own sets of plan as Tim Bresnan bowled Tamim Iqbal with a gem of a delivery in the third over with the score showing 159 for six. Tamim (86) added five runs to his overnight total studded with 14 boundaries and one over boundary.
However, Tigers salvaged some of the lost pride. Mushfiqur Rahim and Naeem with their determined knock set a lesson to the more impetuous of his team-mates, while Naeem justified his inclusion as a batting all rounder as the pair defied England for 39 energy-sapping overs.
Although neither Rahim nor Tamim could convert to deserved hundreds, it is innings like these that others must follow for Bangladesh to stamp their authority in test arena.
Rahim's innings was a badly needed innings for Tigers and his 152-ball defiance suggested he should be batting further up the order looked one of the impressive Tiger batter with solid technique.
He was bold enough to go down at Swann and lofted him straight down the ground, flicked him sweetly through midwicket and then brought his fifty from 90 balls with a powerful sweep. After lunch more of the scoring came from Naeem who expanded his stroke play.
It took two brilliant pieces of work in the field for England to polish the host innings. Firstly Naeem was run out by Michael Carberry's athletic chase, slide and throw which left the batsmen confused, then James Tredwell - briefly on as a substitute after Cook sprinted off to pull off a blinding one-handed catch at midwicket as Rahim went for a slog sweep.
