English Dept of SUB organises freshers' reception

The Department of English Studies of the State University of Bangladesh (SUB) recently organised freshers' reception of Spring 2008 semester followed by a poetry recitation competition.
The freshers' reception started with a welcome speech by Acting Head of Department of English Studies Rezina Sultana. SUB Vice-Chancellor Dr MS Ilyas Dhami was the chief guest of the programme.
Dean of Dhaka University Arts Faculty and Adviser of SUB Dept of English Studies Dr Sadrul Amin was the session chairman. SUB School of Health Sciences Adviser Maj Gen (retd) Dr M Shahjahan, and Registrar Professor AYM Ekram-ud-Daulah also spoke on the occasion.
Later, all the new students were welcomed with flowers and sweetmeats.
Then the poetry recitation competition began. The themes of the poems of the competition were Ekushey February and Spring, while their languages were Bangla and English. A large number of students from all the departments of the university took part in it.
Dr Halima Khatun, an activist of the 1952 Language Movement and an educationalist, handed over prizes to the winners as the special guest of the programme. Renowned cultural personalities - Progna Laboni and Tarana Halim - were the judges of the poetry competition.
The extravaganza ended with a dinner and fanfair of the students, their guardians, faculty members, and officials.
