Ensure rehabilitation of female drug addicts: Experts

Experts have urged authorities concerned to ensure proper treatment and rehabilitation for female drug addicts.
They made the call referring to some statistics showing the increased number of female drug addicts across the country.
Bangladesh Rehabilitation and Assistance Centre for Addicts (BARACA) organised the programme, focusing on female drug addicts, at St Joseph Higher Secondary School in Dhaka recently, says a press release.
Dr. Jesmin Akter, a psychiatrist of Combined Military Hospital and residential psychiatrist of Central Drug Addiction Treatment Centre Dr. Rehanul Islam were present at the programme.
BARACA director Brother Robi Purification presided over the programme while BARACA educator Atonu Barua (Antu) presented the keynote speech.
In the keynote speech, Atonu Barua said, 20.6 per cent are female among total addicted population of the country.
"Considering the number of women drug addicts, the treatment and rehabilitation facilities are inadequate," the BARACA eductor said.
Atonu informed that around 69 women drug addicts took treatment from their organisation in last three years.
"Most of them were facing crisis in their families and they were first introduced to drugs through their family and friends," Atonu Barua said.
Shared their experiences on drug addiction, the participants urged all keep special focus on female drug addicts as they are most vulnerable among addicted population.
