Ensuring animal welfare
Thursday, 16 October 2008
THE greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it treats animals. World Animal Day, observed on October 04, was an opportunity for Bangladesh to reflect how it treats animals, wild and domestic.
The developed countries have advanced animal cruelty laws. Such laws are either non-existent or archaic in the developing countries.
In England, for example, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) plays a pro-active role in preventing cruelty to animals and bringing offenders to justice. It publishes appeals against animal cruelty in newspapers with photographs and its army of volunteers across Britain helps homeless, stranded or abandoned animals.
Bangladesh does not have a similar society to look after pets and other animals. The government can take measures to ensure animal welfare. Instead of killing stray dogs, births could be controlled and they could be given anti-rabies vaccines.
Local cattle may be saved by encouraging beef import. The tiger population is dwindling fast. All endangered species of the country needs to be saved.
The nation needs to renew its pledge to better treat animals and advocate protection of the habitats that are home to wild animals.
This country had a society for prevention of cruelty to animals (SPCA) in the 1950s and 1960s. It needs to be revived and activated.
