Ensuring quality education,,
Sunday, 17 November 2024
Bangladesh has made significant progress in its journey toward expanding primary education. Student attendance has improved, dropout rates have decreased, and enrollment rates from pre-primary to higher education have risen. Achieving gender parity in primary and secondary education is a notable accomplishment. However, the challenge of ensuring quality education remains a priority, as many students complete primary school without acquiring essential skills for future success.
The government has recently taken several promising steps to improve primary education. Over 10,000 new teaching positions have been approved, including specialised roles in music, physical education, and the arts. Additionally, more than 9,500 assistant head teachers have been appointed to strengthen school leadership. Plans are also underway to introduce mid-day meals including nutritious items such as eggs, milk, bread, bananas, and seasonal fruits, aiming to improve students' health and enhance their learning capabilities. Simultaneously, schools are being modernised to create more engaging and inspiring learning environment.
Efforts are also being made to extend educational opportunities for neglected and street children through the Children's Welfare Trust. The duration of pre-primary education is being extended to two years, better preparing young learners for formal schooling. Targeted initiatives are addressing regional disparities, such as improvements in pre-primary schools in areas like Cox's Bazar and Bandarban. Support for teachers has been strengthened with salary increases, streamlined transfer processes, and active district inspection teams to ensure effective implementation of these changes. Primary education lays the foundation for a nation's future. To move forward, it is crucial to prioritise students' mental well-being, particularly of those affected by crises such as floods and social disruptions. With sustained focus and collective effort, Bangladesh can continue to build a stronger foundation for every child's educational journey.
