Ensuring RMG workers' safety and rights

Saturday, 11 May 2024

Bangladesh's garment industry is an apparel production powerhouse; but it has long been struggling with a pressing issue: how to protect workers' rights and safety without sacrificing its ability to compete economically. Millions of people, mainly women, are employed in this sector.
There has been a concerted effort to resolve the workers' safety issue over the last ten years. However, workers' rights go beyond just being safe in the workplace. A decent working environment must have living pay, reasonable working hours and the right to form labour unions. Although workers' minimum wage has been increased, many think it is still insufficient to support a family.
Fatigue and manipulation can result from extended work hours and high output objectives. Ensuring the implementation of labour rules is essential. There are roles to be played by labour organisations, factories, retailers, brands, and the government of Bangladesh. Retailers and brands may pledge to source from manufacturers that uphold fair labour standards and safety.
The garment sector is an essential component of Bangladesh's economy. However, protection of labour rights and safety is crucial for its long-term viability.
