Local entrepreneurs should exploit the business opportunities the upcoming Cricket World Cup will create in Bangladesh, Commerce Minister Faruk Khan said Monday.
"Bangladesh has to be prepared for the World Cup from business point of view," said the minister while addressing a meeting at his office in the secretariat.
The minister was talking to a delegation of Junior Chamber International Bangladesh (JCI). JCI national president Md Shahid Uddin Akbar led the eight-member team, which also included its secretary general Shafiqul Islam and Dhaka central president Md Taslimur Rahman.
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India will co-host the tenth Cricket World Cup final, which will begin February 19, 2011, with Bangladesh and India meeting in Dhaka while reigning champions Australia open with a match against Zimbabwe.
Dhaka will host a total of eight matches including the opening one and two quarterfinals as well as the inaugural ceremony two days before the opening match. The commerce minister said the game's top show would offer immense business opportunities to the local entrepreneurs particularly the young ones.
"The chamber can play an important role in this connection. But are the businessmen prepared to exploit the opportunity?" asked the minister.
The government has already allocated Tk 2.52 billion to the cricket board to refurbish the infrastructures including the stadiums to be used during the tournament, said Mohammed Jalal Yunus, director of Bangladesh Cricket Board.
The board hopes the World Cup will have immense impact on the country's economy and attract thousands of cricket-loving fans, booming tourism.
The JCI business delegation urged the minister to take steps to make bank loans available for the young entrepreneurs.
"Due to lack of financial support, many ideas nip in the bud," said Akbar.
The chamber proposed the minister to jointly introduce awards for young entrepreneurs, which Mr Khan enthusiastically agreed.
