NILPHAMARI, Aug 18: Nilphamari as one district one product export item has been excluded from the probable export list of EPB. Sources said EPB published a list of 14 items of 41 districts in which Nilphamari's one district one product item -- potato -- has been omitted.
Newly published 14 items of EPB are vegetables, fruits, sweet waters fish, crab, organic tea, herbal products, aromatic rice, agar wood, agar atar, hide and hide made products, handicrafts, handloom products, earthen talli, rubber and betel.
Earlier Nilphamari district administration as directed by the EPB proposed potato as the product of the district to be exported. EPB decided to initiate the programme to diversify the country's export items in the global market. The news of exclusion of potato has created frustration among the potato farmers of the district as Nilphamari has surplus potato production and supplies potato to other districts of the country.
Last year, Nilphamari district potato was cultivated in 16,475 hectares of land and production was nearly 2,50,000 metric tonnes. Sources added potato cultivation may be increased manifold in the district if proper initiative is taken by the government as soil of Nilphamari is ideal for growing potato.
Potato farmers of the district demanded inclusion of potato in the one district one product invitation of EPB.
