Erosion threatens 300 families in Madaripur

MADARIPUR, Oct 5: At least 300 families of eight to nine villages under Shibchar and Madaripur Upazila in the district are now under serious threat of erosion by the river Arial Khan. Of them, Kalikapur, Dhurail. Shirkhara, Bahadurpur, Jhaudi, Celarchar, under Sadar Upazila and Sannaserchar, Gupterhat, Khasercharbachamara under Shibchar Upazila are mainly affected.
The river with the rise of water level has engulfed quite a number of villages of Madaripur sadar. If villages are inundated further at least 300 families will become homeless and huge acres of crop lands will be damaged local.
According to local sources, erosion of Arilkhan rendered at least 1500 families homeless and they had to shift their houses more then ones during the last 20 years.
Local people urged the higher authorities concerned of Water Development Board (WDB) to take necessary measures against erosion by the river and thus save the people, dwelling houses, other establishments and standing crops.
Okhil kumar, Executive engineer of district Water Development Board (WDB) said, recently protection embankments were built at madaripur sadar and Shibchar Upazila areas to prevent erosion by the strong current of Arilkhan. Another protection embankments project work will be taken as soon as possible to protect the area.
