Ershad acquitted in ENG corruption case

Wednesday, 16 July 2008

A special court Tuesday acquitted former President HM Ershad of the longstanding ENG (Electronic News Gathering) purchase corruption charge, reports UNB.

After examining 21 witnesses, Divisional Special Judge M Golam Mortuza pronounced the judgment.

According to the prosecution, HM Ershad, while in power, purchased two sets of ENG cameras at a cost of Tk 29.3 million "by misusing his power," which caused a loss of the same amount to the state.

The then Bureau of Anti-corruption had filed the case against the former army chief-turned President with the Tejgaon police on February 29, 1992.

After the verdict, Ershad expressed his satisfaction over the judgment and expressed his gratitude to the almighty. 'Alhamdulillah,' he said as the court pronounced the judgment.
