Ershad emphasises creation of provinces in country

Former President and Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman Hossein Muhammad Ershad laid emphasis on creation of provinces in the country as he said the unitary government system failed to work properly to achieve development goals.
The JP (Ershad) chairman said this while addressing as the chief guest at a function of the Rangpur-Dinajpur Business Development Forum at a city hotel Tuesday evening, reports UNB.
"So far as the unitary system persists, nothing will happen for regional development⦠we have to go for provincial system", the JP chief said.
He, however, said it was not his propaganda, it was a reality. "We want to help ourselves for our development, but it's not possible under the unilateral government system."
Former Board of Investment (BoI) executive chairman and Forum president Nazrul Islam presided over the function. Former Army Chief Mahbubur Rahman also addressed the function.
The former President advised the forum leaders to intensify their demands for extraction and utilisation of coal at Phulbari in Dinajpur.
In the unitary system, the prime minister enjoyed lot of power, but it was not possible for him to look after all the affairs of all the areas of the country of 150 million (15 crore) people, Ershad said.
To justify his plea for open-pit mining, the JP leader said it was better to extract coal in open-pit mining system as it ensured 87 per cent extraction while the underground mining could ensure at best 15 per cent coal extraction.
