Friday, 10 December 2010

Jatiya Party (JP) chairman and former president Hussain Muhammad Ershad Thursday reiterated his demand for decentralisation of administration splitting the country into eight provinces, reports BSS.
"Most of the problems including terrorism and traffic jam in the capital will be solved if the country is split into eight provinces," he said while addressing on the concluding day of the seventh session of the ninth parliament.
The former president praised the grand alliance government for its success in agriculture and food management. "The country achieved near food autarky by dint of the smooth agriculture management in the last two years," he said.
Besides, he said, there was no food crisis in the last two years and a huge number of people have been brought under social safety net due to smooth food management. For this he thanked the Prime Minister as well as the agriculture and food ministers.
Ershad called for taking effective steps by the government to curb terrorism and framing strict law to check stalking. "Many allege that human rights are violated if any terrorist was killed in police firing, but is it not the violation of human rights if millions of people become hostage by a terrorist," he posed a question.
Criticizing the opposition for skipping parliament, he said, "We would not join parliament if we lose in the elections, it cannot be a democratic culture."
The former president called upon the opposition to extend cooperation in implementing the development programme of the grand alliance government by joining parliament.
"The present grand alliance government is committed to building Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by establishing democracy on a solid footing," he said.
