Ershad sued for not submitting polls expense return

LALMONIRHAT, July 4 (UNB): The Election Commission (EC) has filed a case against Jatiya Party (JP) chairman HM Ershad for not submitting the return of election expenses within the stipulated time.
District returning officer of the January-5 national election and deputy commissioner Habibur Rahman filed the case with Sadar thana on Thursday night.
Another case was also filed against Jasad candidate Sadiqul Islam from the parliamentary seat.
The cases were filed as per the Article 74 of the Representation of People Order 1972, confirmed Sadar thana officer-in-charge HM Mahfuzur Rahman.
Ershad, also former President, lost the parliamentary seat (Patgram-Hatibandha) to Awami League candidate Motahar Hossain by a huge margin of 174,433 votes.
He bagged only 5,381 votes while Motahar polled 179,814 votes in the Lalmonirhat-1 constituency.
The JP chief, however, came out victorious from Rangpur-3 constituency in the 10th parliamentary polls.
