Ershad terms army pullout from CHT premature decision

Saturday, 19 September 2009

CHITTAGONG, Sept 18 (UNB): Jatiya Party (E) Chairman HM Ershad said Friday the army pullout from the Chittagong Hill Tracks (CHT) was a premature decision of the government.
"Internal and external conspiracies are behind the withdrawal of troops from the CHT," he told a views-exchange meeting with local journalists at the Chittagong Circuit House.
Opposing the army pullout, Ershad said the law-and-order situation in the hill tracts would deteriorate with the dismantling of army camps. "We cannot support the decision and make the region East Timor or Israel," he added.
About the achievements of the nine-month-old grand alliance government, he said it could not work as per people's aspirations. "However, time has not come yet to assess the failures of this government."
JP secretary general Ruhul Amin Howladar and vice-chairman Sulaiman Alam Shet, among others, attended the meeting.
