Ershad urges Hasina to withdraw AL candidates from JP seats

Tuesday, 23 December 2008

SIRAJGANJ, Dec 22 (UNB): Jaitya Party (JP) chairman HM Ershad Monday urged his ally Sheikh Hasina to withdraw Awami League (AL) candidates from the seats allocated by the grand alliance for his party.
"Withdraw as soon as possible the AL candidates from the eight seats out of 46 allocated for JP by the grand alliance in its (alliance) greater interest," he said at an election rally at Sirajganj Government College ground in the afternoon.
Mentioning his party's sacrifice in forming the grand alliance, Ershad said, "I had put candidates for all the 300 parliamentary seats, but withdrew all but 46 for the sake of the alliance."
The former president urged both the AL and JP supporters to work together to ensure the grand alliance's landslide victory in the elections.
At the rally, Ershad introduced JP leader Aminul Islam Jhantu as a grand alliance candidate for Sirajganj-2 and urged people to cast their votes for the 'plough', the election symbol of JP.
Jannat Ara Henry of Awami League is contesting the election from the constituency with the 'boat' as her election symbol.
"If the grand alliance fails to form government this time, the existence of both AL and JP would be at stake," Ershad said apparently expressing his annoyance as local AL leaders did not show up at the rally.
