Ershad's JP ready to join local polls ahead of national elections

Chairman of the Jatiya Party (JP) HM Ershad said his party had no objection to taking part in the local government elections ahead of the national polls.
The JP was also holding talks with various parties with a view to forming a new alliance, rather than rejoining the previous Awami League-led alliance, Ershad told reporters in the city Monday, reports bdnews24.com.
"It is true that we were part of the grand alliance," he said. "However, they broke that alliance."
"There is now doubt whether it exists any more."
"We will now form a new alliance," he said, adding that he had recently met with Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury and discussed the issue.
"We are also holding talks with some other parties," Ershad said.
The JP chairman expressed the hope that the general election would be held in line with the Election Commission's roadmap.
The former president urged the caretaker government to take emergency measures to control the spiralling price of essentials.
In connection with the recent announcement of an amendment to the inheritance law, Ershad said: "No law should be formulated which is inconsistent with religious norms."
