Former dictator HM Ershad has ‘expressed indignation’ at why no monument has been set up in Dhaka to commemorate the sacrifice of Noor Hossain, who was killed police during his autocratic rule in 1987. The Jatiya Party chief claims he did set up a landmark (at GPO) near the spot in Dhaka where Noor Hossain was shot to death. ‘Many comment about Noor Hossain but none built a monument for him,’ Ershad told a programme in the city. Juba League activist Noor Hossain was killed on November 10, 1987, during anti-autocratic movement. He had famously painted on his body ‘Down with autocracy, let democracy be freed’. Apart from Noor Hossain, Kaliganj Awami League leader and former vice chairman of Red Cross Moij Uddin, Juba League leader Nurul Huda Babul, Kishoreganj’s labour leader Aminul Huda Tito, labour leader Abdur Rahman and journalist Ferdous Alam Dulal were killed either in police firing or by miscreants belonging to a platform established by the then military ruler Ershad during his regime in 1982-1990. The anti-autocracy movement gained momentum through their sacrifices and finally the authoritarian ruler was toppled on Dec 6, 1990, according to bdnews24.com.
