Escaped lioness recaptured at Mirpur Zoo

FE DESK | Saturday, 6 December 2025

A lioness that escaped from Mirpur Zoo on Friday evening was tranquilised and safely returned to its cage around 7:00 pm.
The animal slipped out of its enclosure at about 4:45 pm, confirmed Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Talukdar, Director of the National Zoo. He said the lioness had wandered into the field area but had not harmed anyone.
"The incident occurred at 4:45 pm, just as visitors were leaving the zoo. They were evacuated immediately afterward. We have cordoned off the area, and there is no cause for alarm," he told reporters.
Daisy, the lioness, was born at the Bangladesh National Zoo in 2020. The zoo currently has five lions, both male and female. Daisy's partner died in 2023.
Zoo officials said it took time to bring the situation under control because they aimed to avoid rendering the animal fully unconscious. Rafiqul suggested the cage door may have been left open, as there was no other apparent way for the lioness to escape while the enclosure's grills were secured.
Authorities have announced that a probe body will be formed to investigate the incident.
