Prices of essentials, including rice, potato, lentil, edible oil and poultry birds, rose in the city retail markets on Wednesday due to the impact of fuel price hike on transportation and supply shortfall caused by heavy monsoon rain, market operators said.

They, however, said prices of non-brand edible oil, including soybean oil and super palm oil increased by at least Tk 150 per maund.

Super palm oil is selling at Tk 3900 per maund (37.3kg), which was Tk 3750 three days ago in the wholesale, while the price of soybean oil is Tk 4200 per maund against Tk 4050 a week ago.

Traders blamed the distributors for the rise by slowing down the supply of edible oil.

In the retail market, non-brand oil is selling at Tk 120 per Kg, which was 114 per Kg a week ago.

"Distributors of canned edible oil of some brands informed us that prices of edible oil might go up because of price rise of loose oil," a trader in the city's Karwan Bazar said adding that in the last one week, prices of different brands of five-litre canned edible oil was now selling at Tk 600 to Tk 620, which sold between Tk 565 and Tk 570 few days ago.

The traders said prices of potato increased to Tk18-Tk19 per kg from around Tk 16 per kg on the previous day.

They said prices of varieties of rice increased by Tk 1.0 to Tk 2.0 on Wednesday due to the price hike of diesel and kerosene, which has raised the carrying cost by Tk 3000 to Tk 4000 per truck.

On Wednesday, retailers in the capital said the prices of coarse and finer varieties of rice ranged between Tk 34-Tk36 and Tk 40-Tk 45 per kg against Tk31-Tk33 per kg and Tk 35-Tk 42 per kg respectively a day ago.

Traders at the wholesale level said, Minicate variety of rice was selling at Tk 1500-Tk 1566 per maund (37.3kg) against its previous rate at Tk 1492-Tk 1550 about a week ago. Nazirshail variety of rice was selling at Tk 1500 to Tk 1470 per maund compared to its previous rate at Tk 1417-Tk 1454 and BR-28 at Tk 1300 per maund against Tk 1156- Tk 1160 previously.

On the day, the price of non-brand sugar was Tk35-Tk36 per kg against Tk33 per kg a day ago following duty hike on its import.

Prices of poultry birds, however, increased to Tk 120-Tk130 per kg from Tk 115-Tk125 per kg a day ago.

Prices of poultry birds went up mainly due to shortage in supply as the sector was hit hard in January-March period due to outbreak of bird flu and the incessant monsoon rain, traders said.

Traders in the city markets said a dozen of eggs was selling at Tk 70-Tk 75 against TK 65.

Traders said prices of lentil increased by Tk 10-Tk 8 per kg.

Traders said, prices of the finer variety of local lentil ranged between Tk 100 and Tk 110 against Tk 95-Tk 100 per kg a week ago. Prices of Nepalese and Turkish varieties of lentil were Tk 88-Tk 90 against Tk 75-Tk 76 per kg.

Prices of garlic and turmeric remained unchanged at Tk 25-Tk 30 per kg and Tk 100-Tk 120 per kg at the retails markets.

The prices of coarse flour, however, declined by Tk 1-Tk 2.0 to Tk 40-Tk 41 per kg against Tk 42 a week ago.

The traders said prices of local onion were Tk 24-Tk 26 per kg while the prices of the Indian variety remained unchanged at Tk 15-Tk 16 per kg.

Prices of a number of fresh summer vegetable items that flooded the city markets rose by Tk 2.0 to Tk 4.0 per kg due to supply disruption by monsoon rain.

Best quality snake gourd, cowpea, cucumber, green chilly and bitter gourd are now selling at Tk 20, Tk 18, Tk 15, Tk 20 and Tk 20 per kg respectively.

Beef and mutton were selling at Tk 180-Tk 190 per kg and Tk 240-Tk 250 per kg respectively, unchanged from their previous rates.
