Essentials' prices rise as continual rains disrupt supply

The inclement monsoon weather conditions pushed up prices of some essential commodities despite government's drive against price hike in the city markets over the last week.
Traders said during the last week prices of edible oil, vegetables, green chilli and eggs registered a hike for disruption in supply and production following continual rains.
"The disruption in transport and production of some essential commodities like vegetables and eggs helped push up the prices of those items in the city markets," said a retail trader at the city's Kaptan Bazar Friday.
A wholesale trader at the city's Moulvi Bazar said soybean oil was selling at Tk 2720-Tk 2740 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk 2580-Tk 2600 per maund and super palm at Tk 2700 per maund compared with its previous rates at Tk Tk 2550-Tk 2560 per maund.
Palm oil was selling at Tk 2650 per maund compared with its previous rate at Tk 2500 per maund at the wholesale level.
At the retail level, five-litre cans of edible oil of different brands were selling at Tk 370-Tk 375 compared with their previous rate at Tk 365.
During the last week, at the retail level, prices of brinjal and bitter gourd rose to Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg from their previous rates at Tk 20-Tk 24 per kg.
During the last week, okra, snake gourd and ridge gourd were selling at Tk 22-Tk 24 per kg compared with their previous rates at Tk 18-Tk 20 per kg, traders said.
Potato price remained unchanged in the city markets at Tk 20-Tk 21 per kg over the past week.
During the last week green chilli was selling at Tk 60-Tk 70 per kg compared with its previous rates Tk 40-Tk 48 per kg.
Eggs were selling at Tk 60 per dozen compared with the previous rate at Tk 52 per dozen.
During the last week, at the wholesale level sugar was selling at Tk 910 per maund, unchanged from the previous week.
At the retail level sugar was selling at Tk 28-Tk 30 per kg during the last week, unchanged from the previous week.
During the last week at the wholesale level prices of Indian variety of Swarna and Paari remained unchanged at Tk 750-Tk 780 per maund and Lata at Tk 850-Tk 860 per maund.
Prices of IRRI variety of rice remained unchanged at Tk 700-Tk 710 per maund, Nazirshail from Savar at Tk 850-Tk 900 per maund and Nazirshail from North Bengal at Tk 920-Tk 930 per maund.
Prices of Minicate variety of rice remained unchanged at Tk 1010-1020 per maund at wholesale level, traders said.
At the retail level, prices of fine varieties of rice remained unchanged at Tk 26-Tk 28 per kg and the coarse varieties of rice at Tk 21-Tk 22 per kg.
Prices of the fine variety of lentil remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 72 per kg and its Turkish variety at Tk 56-Tk 60 per kg. Prices of 'moong' pulse remained unchanged at Tk 70-Tk 74 per kg during the last week.
During the last week ginger was selling at Tk 35-Tk 40 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. During the last week beef was selling at Tk 180 per kg, unchanged from the previous week.
Traders said garlic was selling at Tk 40-Tk 60 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. In the last week, prices of poultry birds remained unchanged at Tk 90-Tk 100 per kg and
During the last week, at retail level prices of onion remained unchanged at Tk 24-Tk 26 per kg.
Mutton was selling at Tk 220-Tk 230 per kg, unchanged from the previous week. During the last week a medium-size hilsa fish was selling at Tk 250-Tk 350, unchanged from the previous week.
During the last week at the retail level packaged coarse flour was selling at Tk 27-Tk 28 per kg, unchanged from the previous week in the city markets. Traders said prices of refined salt remained unchanged at Tk 18 per kg.
