EU keen to help strengthen democracy, rule of law

The European Union (EU) is keen to support Bangladesh to build infrastructure and strengthen democracy, develop human rights and rule of law in the country, reports UNB. The EU interest was conveyed when newly appointed EU ambassador in Bangladesh William Hanna presented his credentials to President M Zillur Rahman at Bangabhaban Wednesday. The new ambassador lauded Bangladesh for playing a leading role in implementing various programmes in the international arena. During the meeting, President M Zillur Rahman said Bangladesh is committed to upholding the rule of law, democracy and human rights in the country. "There is free media and independent judiciary in the country." He said Bangladesh always supports international peace and stability and it also stands against all sorts of terrorism. Welcoming the new envoy, Zillur Rahman said Bangladesh has excellent bilateral relations with the EU countries since it had started its journey in 1973. Describing the EU as one of the development partners of Bangladesh, he expressed the hope that these relations will be further strengthened in the coming days. Concerned officials of Bangabhaban and the Foreign Ministry were present.
