EU parliamentary team to discuss food security

Climate change impact on food security will dominate the agenda when an eight-member European Parliament delegation arrives today (Sunday) in the country.
The European Commi-ssion (EC) said the parliamentary team led by UK's Nirj Deva will discuss with top policymakers and development partners on how Bangladesh is preparing to fight the potential impact of climate change on its food security.
During the visit, the delegation is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, speaker of the parliament, food and disaster minister and foreign minister.
The EU delegation is expected to hold discussions with chairpersons of the parliamentary committees on Ministry of Food and Disaster Management, Ministry of Environment Forest and Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.
The delegation will also hold meetings with country representatives of international organisations in Bangladesh and members of local civil society.
Four other Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) in the delegation include Franziska Keller of Germany, Niccolo Rinaldi of Italy, Jean Lambert of the United Kingdom and John Attard-Montalto of Malta.
On the second day, the delegation will visit two EU funded projects, Comprehensive Disaster Management Programme (CDMP) and Vulnerable Group Development for Ultra-Poor (VGDUP) Programme, in Sirajganj.
The delegation of the committee on development of the European Parliament will address a press conference in the city before its departure on Tuesday.
