EU to provide aid for training food inspectors

European Union (EU) will provide Bangladesh with two million US dollars as technical support for training purpose of food inspectors to enhance food safety by strengthening and developing food control capacity.
Inaugurating a two-day workshop on 'Building a Food Safety Advocacy Network in Bangladesh' Chief Technical Adviser of FAO Food Safety Project Deon Mahoney said the fund will be disbursed by the FAO.
Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) organised the workshop with the support from the FAO and EU at BIAM auditorium in the capital Tuesday.
CAB President Quazi Faruque chaired the function while its secretary general Advocate Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, government and non-government officials also shared their experiences in food safety.
Mr Mahoney said the FAO gave a proposal to concerned ministry to establish a national food safety laboratory equipped with modern facilities and the proposal is awaiting approval. "The project will be implemented by FAO in association with the ministry of health and family welfare."
The fund will be used in providing technical support to bring massive change in the country's laboratory management system by generating skilled lab operators and analysts, he said, adding that state-of-the-art machinery will be available in testing food items.
