EU to push for 30pc emission cuts

Sunday, 26 July 2009

STOCKHOLM, July (AP): Sweden's environment minister says the European Union will use all its influence to get the international community to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent during talks on a new climate deal.
Andreas Carlgren says the target has broad support among EU environment ministers but depends on other nations raising their targets.
He said Saturday the EU will push large emitters like the US,India and China to commit to the ambitious targets.
The EU has already agreed to reduce CO2 emissions by 20 percent from 1990 levels by 2020.
Sweden holds the EU presidency and is in charge of leading the European position at December's U.N. climate change talks in Copenhagen.
