EU urged to withdraw 20pc mandatory testing shrimp shipments

Bangladesh has urged the European Union (EU) to withdraw 20 per cent mandatory testing of frozen food consignments exported from the country to EU nations, reports BSS.
Between November 2009 and May 2010, there were 54 incidents of rejections of fresh water shrimp consignments exported to the EU that cast a corrosive effects on export trade of Bangladesh with the EU.
According to a message received in the city Thursday, Bangladesh made the appeal when a trade delegation had recently visited Brussels for resolving problems in connection with export of frozen food from the country to the European states.
A seven-member trade delegation led by Commerce Secretary Md Ghulam Hussain visited Brussels from September 27 to September 29 last to resolve the existing impediments in the way of exporting frozen food.
The delegation discussed with health and consumers directorate general of European Commission (SANCO), director general of Maritime Affairs, president of Sea Food Importers and Processors Alliance (SIPA) and deputy director general for Trade, EU.
More than 50 per cent of Bangladeshi exports go to the EU -- the largest trading partner of the country.
