Evaluation method in new curriculum

Wednesday, 3 July 2024

For the first time, our education system will scrap the number and grading system and start assessing students' skills using 'triangle,' 'circle,' and 'quadrant' indicators. This system is slated for its official launch concurrent with the commencement of the half-yearly assessment test starting from July 3rd. The evaluation system for the new curriculum has not yet been finalised, and most teachers are not proficient in this new method. The ongoing preparation and non-finalisation of the half-yearly evaluation framework have compounded concerns among students and parents. Moreover, several ambiguities are noticeable in the evaluation system of the new curriculum.
According to the draft of the new evaluation, a student in SSC can get admission in HSC even if he or she fails in two subjects, but they will not receive a full certificate. To get a full certificate, the student has to pass the exams in the failed subjects. Because of this, it is anticipated that students' reliance on private tutors for support beyond traditional classroom settings will escalate. The curriculum should be structured and implemented in a way that enables students not only to acquire foundational knowledge but also to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability skills, thereby preparing them to successfully navigate the challenges they will encounter in the future.
