Eve teasers kill protester

Monday, 13 October 2014

It was sad to read about eve-teasers killing a young man in Bhashantek area in the capital as the victim protested against the harassment of his cousin sister. The miscreants severely beat and stabbed the victim. He died on way to hospital. If such incident happens in the capital, what is going on elsewhere in the country is anybody's guess.  Eve-teasing is a mild offence in Bangladesh; but in reality it is not. Eve-teasing has a long lasting effect on a girl's psyche. The law enforcers often do not take it seriously, and its consequences at times are unpleasant and deadly.
Our society must change its attitude towards eve-teasing because most of the time it crosses limits and leads to sexual harassment. We hope   the killers of Bhasantek murder will face exemplary punishment. Eve-teasing is rampant in our society. School and college dropouts hang out in order to tease girls. So parents quite often marry off their daughters at a tender age.
A research shows that more than 90 per cent women were victims of eve-teasing in their life. Massive awareness needs to be created against this social vice.
