Every NID card holder should submit tax return: Momen

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen on Saturday said tax return submission should be made mandatory for those who have National Identity Card (NID).
"During Muhith bhai's tenure, I proposed him to make return filing mandatory for all national identity card holders to increase the tax coverage," the foreign minister said while speaking at a memorial meeting on former finance minister AMA Muhith at the Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) auditorium in the city on Saturday.
"But till date that has not been implemented due to bureaucratic tangles," he said adding if all NID card holders can be brought under tax net, the tax-GDP ratio which is now 7 to 8 per cent will increase to 20 to 25 per cent.
The ERF organised the memorial meeting to discuss late Muhith's life and works.
Momen, who is brother of Muhith, said the country's development got momentum for Hasina-Muhith duo.
Former Bangladesh Bank Governor Fazle Kabir and former Finance Secretary Mahbub Ahmed were present as special guests at the event chaired by ERF president Mohammad Refayet Ullah Mirdha.
