Evidence of police brutality

Saturday, 16 May 2015

Photographs published in different dailies on 11 May 2015 gave evidence of police action on the protesters protesting against lack of action by the government regarding sexual harassment on Pahela Baishakh. The photographs showed policemen swooping on a very young girl who joined the protesters. The picture is self explanatory.
In stark contrast and sadly though, we saw very little action from the police members when women were harassed on Pahela Baishakh near the TSC of Dhaka University. When students caught a few culprits red-handed and handed them over to the police on duty there, they were released soon after. However, after persistent demands from different quarters, the police department formed an enquiry committee and started an investigation into the incident. All these incidents do not speak well of our law enforcing agencies. But we would like to trust the members of our law enforcing agencies with the onerous responsibility of maintaining law and order of society and would like to believe that they will not spare any criminal whoever he or she is. We would also like the police to reciprocate our feelings.
We are happy to know that the guilty police official has been suspended and official proceedings are being drawn against him. A legitimate action against any offender is always appreciated by all.
