Ex-AL lawmaker sent to jail

Former Awami League (AL) lawmaker from Dhaka's Demra area Habibur Rahman Mollah was sent to jail after he surrendered to a city court Tuesday in a tax-dodging case, reports UNB.
Mollah surrendered before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Azizul Haq at noon and appealed for bail.
After hearing, the court rejected his bail petition and ordered him into jail.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) filed a case with Judge Azizul Haq's court on November 18 (Sunday) against the former lawmaker on charge of evading Tk 4.54 million in wealth tax during fiscal years 1996 through 2007.
"He evaded paying the tax through hiding wealth worth over Tk 19.20 million," it is stated in the case.
The court issued the arrest warrant on the day the case against Habibur Rahman Mollah was filed.
