Ex-BNP MP Habibul among six sued for extortion

SATKHIRA, July 22 (UNB): A case was filed against ex-BNP lawmaker and district BNP president Habibul Islam and his five associates Saturday night on charge of extortion and ransacking a business establishment.
Sources said Abdur Rahman, a local businessman of Sripatipur village in Kolaroa upazila, filed the case with the police.
In his complaint, Abdur Rahman alleged that associates of Habibul Islam demanded a toll of Tk 0.1 million (1 lakh) from him on October 1, 2001.
As per the demand Abdur Rahman gave Tk 30,000 to the extortionists on October 4.
Later, cohorts of Habibul Islam attacked the business establishment of Abdur Rahman for not paying the rest of the money on October 12 and damaged valuables worth Tk 0.2 million (2 lakh).
