Former finance secretary and Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of Bangladesh Gholam Kibria passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 79. He left behind his wife, two sons, a daughter and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death. He was buried at the city's Azimpur graveyard. His Namaz-e-Janaza was held at the main mosque at Sector 7, Uttara in the capital. Finance Minister AMA Muhith, former finance adviser M Syeduzzaman, former adviser to the caretaker government M Hafiz Uddin Khan, former finance secretary Zakir Ahmed Khan, former CAG Asif Ali, Finance Secretary Mohammad Tareque and incumbent CAG Mr. Ahmed Ataul Hakeem, among others, attended the Namaz-e-Janaza. Mr. Gholam Kibria was the fourth Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh. He did Bachelor of Science from University of Dhaka. He also studied in the International Management Development Department of the Syracuse University, USA. After serving as the Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh, he became the Secretary, Ministry of Finance; and later on, Alternate Executive Director, World Bank, representing the constituency comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Sri Lanka. During his long service career, he also served as commercial counsellor of Bangladesh in Moscow for some time. During his tenure as the CAG of Bangladesh, late Gholam Kibria made significant contribution to standardising auditing practices in Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) of Bangladesh. He incorporated modern auditing techniques in the financial and compliance auditing. Late Kibria was well-known for his scholastic pursuits. He lived a life of simplicity. His honesty and integrity was a password among his colleagues who held him in high esteem. He was very humble and modest in his dealing with friends, colleagues and relatives. In his death, the country has lost one of its most respected senior citizens and a former civil servant of utmost integrity and extraordinary calibre.
