Ex-GS of BCL Iqbalur Rahim sent to jail

Former general secretary (GS) of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of Awami League, Iqbalur Rahim was sent to jail Saturday after a two-day remand in an extortion case, reports bdnews24.com.
Director of the North Star Resources Limited, MM Waliz Mirza, filed the case accusing Rahim of extorting Tk 7.50 million.
Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shafiqul Islam ordered Rahim into jail following rejection of his bail prayer.
The investigation officer (IO) of the case, Sub-Inspector of Shahbag police station Ali Asgar Khan, did not appeal for further remand.
Syed Rezaur Rahman, Shahara Khatun and Iqbalur Rahim's brother M Enayetur Rahim stood for Iqbal.
The Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on August 1 ordered Rahim remanded for two days.
Other accused persons in the case, Shechchhasebok League President Bahauddin Nasim, former president of BCL, Shahe Alam, Awami League Assistant Secretary Shafi Ahmed and SM Kamal Hossain are absconding.
In the case, filed with Shahbag police station on July 31, contractor Waliz Mirza alleged that on October 12, 2000 their firm got a contract to supply electronics goods worth Tk 40 million to DESA.
