Friday, 22 June 2007

COMILLA, June 21 (UNB): A case was filed against former Jamaat-e-Islam lawmaker Syed Abdullah M Taher, his brother Syed Ekramul Huq and 33 other Jamaat leaders and activists Wednesday night on corruption charges.
Police said Abdul Khaleq, a sawmill owner of Sharshadi village in Sadar Upazila, filed the case with the Chouddagram police station.
Chouddagram Upazila Jamaat-e-Islam Ameer M Shahjahan and general secretary Shahabuddin were also among the 35 accused.
In his complaint Khaleq stated that Ekramul Huq, at the behest of Taher, came to his sawmill along with his cohorts and demanded a toll of Tk 0.50 million from him.
But when Khaleq refused to give the money, Ekramul and his accomplices attacked the sawmill and looted Tk 25,000 in cash, three motorcycles, valuable timber and furniture on June 18, 2001.
He said they also abducted him at gunpoint and took him to Taher's house where they threatened him not to file any case against them with the police.
Joint forces some days back arrested Taher on charges of corruption and abuse of power.
