Ex-MP Shahjahan, two others get 5 years in jail

CHAPAINAWABGANJ, July 23 (UNB): A court here Monday sentenced former BNP lawmaker Shahjahan Mia and two other leaders of the immediate-past ruling party to five years rigorous imprisonment (RI) in an extortion case.
The three district politicians were also fined Tk 10,000 each. In default, they have to serve six more months in jail.
The two other convicts are Shibganj Poura BNP president Shafiqul Islam and BNP leader Ainal Huq. All the three were in the dock during the judgement.
According to the prosecution, they, on occasion, demanded Tk 75,000 from businessman Panaullah of Jalmachhmari village in Shibganj Upazila. "They also gave him life threats." He eventually gave in and on November 19, 2004, paid them Tk 60,000.
After takeover by the caretaker government, Panaullah filed an extortion case with Shibganj thana on April 23 against the MP and his two associates.
