Humayun Sultan, son of ex-Awami League MP Khan Tipu Sultan, was arrested early Friday for suspected murder of his wife. A murder case lodged around Thursday midnight also accuses the former Jessore lawmaker and his wife Dr Jesmin Ara Begum, said Dhanmondi Police Station OC Abu Bakar Siddique. Doctors said Humayun's wife Shamaruf Mahjabin Kona, 24, was brought dead at Central Hospital in the evening from Tipu Sultan's Dhanmondi residence. Tipu’s family had claimed that she committed suicide. But Kona's friends and relatives suspected that she had been murdered. Her father Nurul Islam, after arriving in Dhaka from Jessore, later alleged his daughter had been killed and filed the case against the trio. Humayun, who was at the police station at the time, was arrested right away in the wee hours of Friday, OC Siddique said. Several hours earlier, Islam had alleged that attempts were being made to cover up his daughter’s murder. Staff of the Central Hospital said Tipu Sultan's wife Jesmin Ara had brought her daughter-in-law. Doctors declared her dead when she was taken to hospital from the Dhanmondi residence, Tipu Sultan claimed. Police also rushed there. Kona's father Nurul Islam, a Jessore resident, is a retired PWD engineer. Her mother died last year. Kona did her MBBS at Dhaka's Holy Family Medical College, where her mother-in-law Jesmin Ara is a doctor. She was pursuing FCPS at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medial College University. Kona had been living in Tipu Sultan's Dhanmondi residence since she was married to Humayun two years ago, according to bdnews24.com.
