A Dhaka court sent to jail former lawmaker Solaiman Salim in a case lodged over the murder of Rakib Hawlader during the recent anti-discrimination student movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Zunaid passed the order on Thursday as police produced him before the court.
The court said the hearing on his bail plea and police's petition to place him on remand will be held after the main case documents reach the court.
A team of Chawkbazar Police Station arrested Solaiman Salim from Gulshan area around 1:30 am on Thursday, said Rezaul Hossain, officer-in-charge (OC).
Rakib got shot as activists of Awami League and its front and associate bodies opened fire and hurled crude bombs on the protesters during the student-people movement at Chankharpool crossing in the morning on August 5. The Awami League goons even stopped the people from rescuing Rakib and taking him to the nearest hospital.
He was later rushed to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, A Dhaka court sent former lawamaker Ali Azam Mukul to jail in a case lodged with Mirpur Model Police Station over the murder of student Nahidul Islam.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order on Thursday as police produced Mukul before the court with a prayer to keep him behind the bars. The defence, however, argued for his bail.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Ali Azam Mukul from the capital's Hazaribagh area on Wednesday.
Nahidul was killed on July 19 while taking part in Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in the capital's Mirpur area. His cousin filed the case on September 1 against 41 people.
