Ex-NBR member Matiur, wife arrested

Former NBR member Md Matiur Rahman, who gained public attention for his son's goat scandal, and his first wife Laila Kaniz were arrested on Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Muhammad Talebur Rahman said a team of detectives arrested the former National Board of Revenue (NBR) official and his wife, a former upazila chairman, following a raid in Bashundhara residential area in the city. Legal actions were being taken against them.
On January 6, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed three new cases against Matiur Rahman, his first wife, and his son and daughter on charges of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 1.26 billion (Tk 126 crore) and concealing information about their assets.
The ACC filed two cases against Matiur and his second wife, Shammi Akhter Shibli, accusing them of amassing illegal assets worth Tk 111.8 million on December 15, 2024.
Md Matiur Rahman gained public attention after a controversial incident during the Eid-ul-Adha last year, involving his son, Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, who purchased a high-valued goat for Tk 1.6 million. The incident brought both public and legal scrutiny.
