Ex-PM's aide sentenced to 13 years in jail

A special court Sunday sentenced former prime minister Khaleda Zia's assistant personal secretary Md Shamsul Alam Mintu to 13 years in jail on charges of amassing wealth beyond known income and holding back the information on assets, reports bdnews24.com.
Judge Tanzina Ismail of the Special Court-6 also fined him Tk 8.8 million and would have to stay another year behind bars in case of failure to pay the fine.
The court sentenced Alam's wife Khadiza Anam to three years in jail and fined her Tk 0.1 million. She will have to stay six more months in jail if she fails to pay the fine. The court also ordered authorities to confiscate all his illegally acquired wealth.
Both the accused are currently on the run and the sentence will be effective from the day of their arrest or surrender.
The Anti-corruption Commission filed the case with Ramna Police Station on March 23.
The accused amassed illegal wealth worth Tk 1 crore and concealed the assets to the graft watchdog, according to case details.
