Ex-RAB officer Rana put on 7-day remand

NARAYANGANJ, May 18 (Agencies): A court here Sunday placed former RAB officer Lt Commander MM Rana on a seven-day remand in connection with the killing of seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Chandni Rupam passed the order when Detective Branch of Police Inspector Mamunur Rashid Mondal produced him before his court seeking a 10-day remand.
Earlier, police arrested the former officer of Rapid Action Battalion-11 from Dhaka Cantonment area early Sunday in connection with the much-talked-about seven murders.
Rana was arrested a day after the Narayanganj district police arrested two other ex-Rab officers-Lt Col(retd) Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and Major (retd) Arif Hossain of Bangladesh Army-from the same area early Saturday.
Contacted, duty officer of Cantonment Police Station sub-inspector Saiful Islam said Narayanganj district police with the help of Cantonment thana police arrested MM Rana from the Cantonment area at about 1:30 am and took him to Narayanganj.
Lt Commander Rana was sent on forced retirement from Bangladesh Navy and Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad and Major Arif Hossain from Bangladesh Army following the allegation of their involvement in the abduction and killing of the seven people.
Police already took Tareque Sayeed and Arif Hossain on a five-day remand for interrogation in connection with the gruesome murders.
Meanwhile, the police have arrested a Narayanganj reserved-seat councillor, who is said to be the 'girlfriend' of Nur Hossain, the prime suspect in the city's seven murders.
Jannatul Ferdous Nila was arrested outside the district Circuit House Sunday evening. She was exiting the public hearing held there by an administrative probe committee when the arrest was made.
"We have arrested the so-called wife of Nur Hossain at 6pm. She will be questioned about the murders," said Sadar Model Police OC Monjur Quader.
Another report from Comilla adds: a case was filed Sunday against five RAB personnel, including former commanding officer of RAB-11 Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, in connection with the abduction of two BNP leaders in Comilla.
The two BNP leaders-Saiful Islam Hiru, a former MP and president of Laksham upazila unit BNP and Humayun Kabir Pervez, president of Laksham municipality unit BNP, remained missing since November 27, 2013.
