A Dhaka court has sentenced a former engineer of Roads and Highways Department (RHD) to seven years in jail. Senior Special Judge Md Zohurul Haque gave the verdict on Wednesday, saying Abdul Malek had accumulated wealth much beyond his known sources of income. He was also fined Tk 100,000 -- failing to pay which would lead to an additional year in jail. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case against Malek in June 2006 with the Dhanmondi Police. The court also ordered freezing of his FDR account and confiscation of his assets-- a five-storey building in Pallabi, three flats in Dhanmondi and one flat in Gulshan, said ACC lawyer Mir Ahmed Ali Salam. Malek’s wife Ambiya Khatun was acquitted but court has ordered a freeze on her FDR account. The couple was present in the court when the verdict was pronounced, according to bdnews24.com.
